Dental Care for Babies and Young Children
Baby teeth are just as important as adult teeth. They help with speech development and eating and help hold the space for the permanent teeth to come through in the proper position. Daily care is needed to prevent tooth decay. The following tips will help ensure your child maintains healthy teeth:
- Do not allow your baby to go to bed with a bottle containing any sweetened liquids including milk
- Do not dip the dummy in any sweet syrups or honey
- Teach your child to drink from a cup from around 12 months of age
- Avoid a high sugar diet and frequent snacking
- Encourage your child to drink water
- Gently clean your babies’ teeth with a damp soft face washer or cloth at night
Fissure Sealants
Fissure Sealants are protective coatings applied to the grooves of the permanent back molars to prevent cavities from developing. The best time to apply fissure sealants is soon after the permanent molar teeth appear, around the age of 6. The procedure is painless and non-invasive. Sealants can be applied to any teeth with deep grooves that may be vulnerable to decay. They can be easily repaired or replaced occasionally as they can wear down, but this will be monitored at every check-up.

Trauma in Baby Teeth
It is common for toddlers and children to bump their teeth. It is important that you do not try to reposition a displaced baby tooth as it may damage the permanently developing tooth underneath. If there is any bleeding, apply pressure with a clean cloth or gauze. It is essential to seek professional advice as soon as possible.
